Thor A. Hagen Family

THOR A. HAGEN (1841-1922), born at and married Ingeborg (Haugen) Hagen (1848-1932) at Hedalen, Valders, Norway. The family came to Iowa in 1880, and Griggs County in 1881; took homestead on 12-145-58. 4 youngest children born in Griggs County Children:

MARY (Marie) (1868-1926), married Thor Hetager (1869-1835). Son: Torolf (1894-1904). She then married E. C. Butler (1844-1926) who was born at Gorham, N. H. E. C. first married Mary Hayes ( -1882) of New Glouster, Me. He was veteran of Civil War; mined in Nev. in 1870's; came to Tower City 1882, to Griggs County May 20, 1882. Children: Daughter, died in 1882: Clarence (1908- ). Children: Janice, Janell: William H. (1873-1955), born at Norway, Me.; graduate of Mayville Normal, 1895, teacher, County Supt. of Steele County, 1898; to Cooperstown with Hammer-Condy Co.; married, 1897, Idella Wilson (1875- ). a teacher. Children: Edward - 4 sons - Mrs. H. C. (Frances) Swanson.

BELLE (Ingeborg) (1871-1953), married, 1895. Mons H. Hagen who died in Norway in 1936; both were teachers. Children: Hector (1896- ); Hester (1898- ), married Carroll Friswold (1897- ), son of Seval Friswold (1861-1945)-their son: Carrot, Jr. married Norma Hagen, daughter of Arne; Ingmar,-sons: Fredrick and Renshaw. Belle married second, Dana Winslow. She wrote and published several books: "The White Dawn;' "Where Man is King," "Just Sixteen."

ANNIE C1875-1952) married William Moddie (1873- ). Children: Florence, married Art Sell - son: William.

JENNIE (1878- ), married, 1905, Grant E. ("Eddie") Snyder (1877- ), Son: Thorman J. (1908- ) - 4 children.

THEA (November 19, 1879-1955), married first Benj. Upton (1855-1904), who was born at Norway, Me., the partner of E. C. Butler in raising Blooded Shorthorn cattle; were at Mardell, winter of 1882-83. Daughter: Thelma. Thea married second Harmon Clarke Smith (1888- ). Sons: Dallas and Jerome. Smith remarried in 1957.

ARNE (October 9, 1881- ), born in log house of John Torfin where the 1st child of Griggs County was born September 11, 1880; homesteaded; ,married, 1913 Ida Grunfossen (1890-1957), a teacher, who was born in Sweden and came to Minnesota as a young child. Children. Mrs. Ralph L. (Priscilla) Clausen of Wash. Children: Susan, Maryalis, Charles A. Mrs. Carrot) (Norms) Friswold, Jr. of Calif. Children: Shelly, James. Mrs. Gordon J. (Eugenia "Duns") Frigaard, Cooperstown. Daughter: Lisa. Mrs. George (Arlene) Kolstad of Calif. Son: David.

CHRISTOPHER (1886-1951), married Esther M. Olson (1896-1918). Son: John T. (1916- ).

TORVALD (November 25, 1888- ), married, 1915, Anna G. Gronvold (1889- ). No children.

IDA (March 20, 1891- ), singer, social service worker, artist, married, 1915, John Wilfred Pitman (1889- ); second, married Clarence Marshall ( -1947). No children.
