P. A. Melgaard

Cooperstown, North Dakota

was born in Hassel on August 31, 1853. He grew up in Namsos where he received his school education. He emigrated to America in 1867 on the sailing ship "St. Lorence" along with Moe at St. Luke's Hospital. It was an eight week voyage and they landed in Quebec. He moved to Chicago and then from there to La Crosse, Wisconsin. He came to Cooperstown in 1883 and has lived there since. He was the first elected county auditor in Griggs County. He held that position for 14 years and is now the deputy auditor.

Melgaard is one of the pioneers of Griggs County.

His wife, Johanne Glasoe, is from Beitstaden. She is a sister of Pastor Olav Glasoe. Their oldest son, Osvald Melgaard, is in the State Bank Clairmont, South Dakota . One other son, Adolf Melgaard, is the treasurer of the Citizen State Bank, Sutton, North Dakota. The youngest son Fredrik goes to Dakota Business College in Fargo.
