Ellen Elizabeth Cooper was born on April 25, 1843.  She was a twin sister of Edwin Graham Cooper. 

Nellie married Mr. Charles L. Rice on August 24, 1868 in Washtenaw County.  He lived only a few years.  She then married George Barnard Sr., a widower. 

G. W. Barnard is listed as a squatter on Section 28 of Washburn Township in July of 1881.

The first Cooperstown postmaster was George Barnard who was appointed December 28, 1882.

They signed Rev. Rockwell's request to form a Congregational Church on June 17, 1884.

He was on the director of first school board in 1883 when Cooperstown was known as District Number Four.

Georgie Barnard was listed as one of the first pupils in the first schoolhouse in the county was built on Section 6 of what is now Sverdrup township May of 1883.

He was the first Treasurer of Griggs County in 1884.

They lived in Griggs County and farmed on Section 28 in Washburn Township until the big freeze in 1888 caused them to quit farming.
