In May of 1883 Dr. George Newell came to Cooperstown where he opened the first drugstore, and gave up his practice except for surgical cases.  The reason Dr. Newell gave for giving up his practice was the long drives and the dark stormy nights.  Dr. Kerr attended to the country practice

July 26, 1888, Dr. Nils Bergstrom arrived from Montevideo, Minnesota.  He operated a drug store in connection with his medical practice.  His brother, 01af had told him of the new village of Cooperstown.  Nils came to Cooperstown and was so impressed that he decided to locate here.  He found office space in the new Palace Hotel.  In 1888, Dr, Newell sold his drug store to S. Almklov.  Dr. Newell suffered a stroke in 1890 and returned to Rochester, Wisconsin.  He died in 1898.

 

Dr. George F. Newell's father was Dr. Oliver Newell.  Dr. Oliver Newell was a native of Vermont, but early settled in Canada.  He was a graduate of Castleton (Vermont) Medical College, and of McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, and in middle life removed to Canada and located near Nelsonville.  He died in Canada in 1866, aged seventy-five years.  He married Eliza Cowie, and they had a family of two daughters and six sons, namely:  George F., Seymour, Herbert, Charles, Levi, Warren, Lucy (who died unmarried) and Cynthia (wife of Herbert Shufeldt).  Three of the sons, George F., Seymour and Charles. 

Dr. George F. Newell was born in Vermont, and graduated from Castleton Medical College, Castleton, Vermont.  He was a school teacher in young manhood.  He began practice at Waterford, Racine County, Wisconsin in 1842 after some years going to Racine, whence, however, he returned to Waterford, continuing in practice there for the remainder of his life.  He died in Rochester, Racine County, Wisconsin March 5, 1898 aged eighty-two years.
